Through Sean Jones: Promoter Bob Arum says he wants to set up a fight between Vasily Lomschenko and Shakur Stevenson next year if the two win their subsequent battles.
Arum plans to match WBO Super Featherweight Champion Shakur Stevenson (17-0, 9 KOs) against Michel berchelt next in a match that would excite a lot of boxing fans in the United States
Although Shakur has repeatedly told the boxing public and the media that he wants to face the WBC 130-pound champion. Oscar Valdez then it won’t happen right away.
Valdez against Stevenson still has to marinate by passing Shakur through Berchelt then Lomachento to get to the match with Oscar.
Shakur refuse to fight Lomachenko?
If Shakur refuses to fight both or one of these fights, you can read between the lines that he doesn’t fancy his chances against them, especially Lomachenko.
Arum says he has already spoken to Valdez manager Frank Espinoza and they want to fight the former two-division world champion Emmanuel Navarrete Following. Moreover, Vargas coach Eddy Reynoso wants Navarrete (35-1, 29 KOs) to fight next, so the decision has been made that he will be next.
In the meantime, Arum would like Stevenson to defend against former WBC super featherweight champion Berchelt (38-2, 34 KOs) in his next fight.
If Stevenson wins, Arum is interested in taking on former three-division world champion Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) in his next fight, on the condition that Loma defeats Richard Commey next month in their fight on December 11. on ESPN at Madison Square Garden. At New York.
Lomachenko vs. Shakur Stevenson would be a huge fight for fans in 2022, and it would be the perfect setup for the winner to take on Teofimo Lopez. Of course, that’s if Teofimo is ready to fight the winner.
Sean Jones doubts Teofimo is ready to accept another fight with Lomachenko at this point. Short of dragging Teofimo into the ring kicking and screaming, I don’t think he will agree to fight Lomachenko again.
Valdez will face Navarrete next
“I know Shakur would love to fight Oscar [Valdez], but I think the people of Navarrete after their fight in San Diego [against Joet Gonzalez last October] got me and said, ‘We want to fight Valdez next, ‘ and I spoke to Frank Espinoza, the manager of Valdez, and he says he spoke to [Oscarâs trainer] Eddy Reynoso and they love Navarrete’s fight, âBob Arum told ESNEWS.
“So if the two fighters [Oscar Valdez and Emanuel Navarrete] want to fight against each other, that’s what the fight will do, âArum said, clarifying that Shakur Stevenson will NOT fight Valdez afterwards as he requested.
“It’s a possibility, yeah,” Arum said when asked if Shakur could face former WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt next. âWe have a lot of talent in the 130-pound division.
“Yes, it could [be a possibility between Vasily Lomachenko and Stevenson]. The fight I’d like to do, assuming Loma makes it through [Richard] Commey [on December 11th], at 130, 135, or a catch weight, Loma and Shakur. It’s a wonderful fight“Arum said of a big fight he wants in 2022.
We know Lomachenko would take the fight with Stevenson in a hot second, but it’s highly doubtful Shakur would agree.
I mean, Stevenson looks good against old guys like Jamel Herring or lesser opposition like Joet Gonzalez and Jeremia Nakathilia. Still, it’s a different story for him to fight someone really talented like Lomachenko.
Shakur might have flashbacks to his loss to Robeisy Ramirez at the 2016 Olympics when it comes to accepting a fight with Lomachenko, and it is questionable whether he would accept the battle.
