The world is wondering what’s next for Canelo Alvarez and the answer could be right under his nose as fans have lost their minds for a mind-blowing punch.

Boxing megastar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made history on Sunday (AEST), but the undercard delivered something very special as well.

Alvarez became the first man to unite the super middleweight division with his 11th round knockout of the previously undefeated Caleb Factory.

But before the main event started, fans were treated to one of 37-year-old Anthony Dirrell’s KOs of the Year.

As Dirrell appeared to be starting to come out of the sport following a loss to David Benavidez and a draw against Kyrone Davis in his last two fights, the two-time world champion has shown he is not an exhausted force against Marcos Hernandez.

In four dominant rounds, Dirrell struck his opponent at will before unleashing a searing knockout blow.

Landing the uppercut in the middle, he connected right on the button and left Hernandez in la-la land.

As Hernandez got back to his feet he was not stable on his legs and referee Celestino Ruiz called off the fight.

“I had to slip in and put it right on the button,” Dirrell said. “We practiced this in the gym and it worked.”

The celebrations started as soon as the punch landed for Dirrell, who ended with a flip.

He said he knew he won seeing Hernandez on the web.

“He started to shake on the floor but he got up,” Dirrell said. “I think it should have been over with him on the ground just to keep him calm because when you get up too fast it makes it worse. I knew he wasn’t going to continue after that.

As the boxing world waited for Canelo-Plant, social media erupted about the stunning finish.

CBS Sports writer Brian Campbell wrote: “Hell of a Dirrell finish”.

Dan Rafael tweeted: “In a superb performance, @Anthonydirrell scored a spectacular knockout uppercut from Marcos Hernandez. Dirrell is hoping to land a hit with the winner of #CaneloPlant.”

After the fight, Dirrell called Canelo and admitted that he would retire if he couldn’t get the big fight. Even before his fight, he was making noise about the Mexican.

“I want Canelo, the big boss,” Dirrell said. “I think everyone wants it. Everyone wants to dethrone him, I hope I made a big enough statement to have him, that’s the plan.

“I’m 37, if I can’t fight for something, I fight for nothing. It is every boxer’s dream to be an undisputed champion. So at least let me fight for it and see. If I can’t, I get old for this man and I can’t keep doing it.
