2021 has been a crazy year in the boxing ring with shocking upheavals and iconic moments that will live on in the tradition of the sport forever. 2022 is shaping up to offer more of the same.
The year kicks off on New Years Day with a Fox pay-per-view event featuring heavyweights Luis Ortiz and Charles Martin. Two world title fights will close January with Joe Smith Jr. defending the WBO light heavyweight title against Callum Johnson on January 15 and Gary Russell Jr. putting his WBC featherweight title up against Mark Magsayo on January 22. February was also busy the first weekend, marked by a good matchmaking as Keith Thurman faced Mario Barrios.
It’s a good start to the year, but things will continue to improve with fights that are almost guaranteed. Among these is the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua for three of the four recognized heavyweight world championships. Usyk dominated Joshua last September to win the WBA, IBF and WBO titles. There is no date set for the rematch yet, but both sides are aiming for April.

Other unified and undisputed champions will also be in action in 2022. Undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor is expected to defend his belts on February 26 against Jack Catterall. Additionally, at some point in the year unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. will defend the belts he won in a shocking Teofimo Lopez upset in November. Kambosos’ opponent and next date are not set, but the options are seemingly endless for Kambosos.
