Shields-Marshall, McBroom-AnEsonGib: Boxing Schedule September 8-10, 2022

ESPN+ and social networks8:00 a.m. ET, Shields vs. Marshall press conference. Considering the heat between Shields and Marshall – and between Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner – it might actually be a useful presser!

DAZN and YouTube9:00 p.m. ET, Yokasta Valle vs. Thi Thu Nhi Nguyen. A 105-pound unification from Costa Rica, where IBF titleholder Valle has home ground against Vietnamese Nguyen, who arrives with the WBO belt. That’s abnormally significant for a Golden Boy Thursday show, but not exactly abnormally big. There’s also an interim WBC title fight at 115 between Adelaida Ruiz and Sonia Osorio, as well as veteran Anabel Ortiz against Maria Micheo Santizo. It’s a women’s boxing-based show, not the last of the weekend or the biggest, and we’ll be there. Bad Left Hook will be covered live.

ESPN+ and social networks8:00 a.m. ET, Weighing in between Shields and Marshall.

ESPN+7:00 p.m. ET, Christian Mbilli vs. DeAndre Ware. It’s a boon for Canadian boxing this weekend, and boyis it canadian boxing. Here we have Mbilli, 27, making about a fifth straight sidestep in his career against Ware, a 34-year-old who is 3-3 in his last six. It’s better than the DAZN/UBP shows, but that doesn’t mean much.

DAZN8:00 p.m. ET, Josh Wagner vs. Jorge Sanchez. This is United Boxing Promotions Ontario’s first show on DAZN, with the second taking place on Saturday night. To be really, entirely honest, these are club-level shows; Wagner is undefeated, but he’s also 29 and has had 12 fights in nine years as a pro.

ESPN+2:30 p.m. ET, Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall, Mikaela Mayer vs. Alycia Baumgardner. I’m pumped for this one. It’s undisputed at 160 between Shields and Marshall, two true rivals, and a three-belt unification at 130 between Mayer and Baumgardner, two other real rivals. There’s no love lost all around here. Marshall beat Shields in the amateurs a long time ago, but never followed that. Still, she’s been talking about it forever, and it clearly bothers Shields. They are both very confident. Mayer and Baumgardner are also very confident and have spoken a lot. This will also be shown on Sky Sports in the UK. Bad Left Hook will be covered live.

DAZN8:00 p.m. ET, Sukhdeep Singh vs. Xhuljo Vrenozi. Another UBP show from Brampton, Ontario. This one has Singh, another undefeated 29-year-old India-born, Ontario-based ranked No. 119 in the world by BoxRec at middleweight, against Albanian Vrenozi, now living in Italy, ranked No. 355 in the world by BoxRec at junior middleweight. I don’t really understand this partnership, honestly. Canadians surely aren’t hungry for this type of awesome content behind a paywall.

PPV FITE11:00 p.m. ET, Social Gloves: Austin McBroom vs. AnEson Gib. It’s more celebrity boxing. You may remember AnEsonGib looking like he belonged in a boxing ring against Jake Paul in early 2020. He will be fighting someone named “Austin McBroom”, whose name I think I recognize. another one of those events that go wrong and people didn’t get paid or something. The event also features former NBA player Nick “Swaggy P” Young against another named “Blue Face”, and a battle of former NFL running backs Adrian Peterson, a legitimate legend, and Le ‘veon Bell, a former All-Pro. They’re third from the top under the likes of “Austin McBroom” and “Blue Face,” if you’re wondering what stardom really is in 2022. Either way, I’m going to do this show on an experimental basis. ; it’s a late start to the evening when there’s nothing else to drive traffic to the site, and I want to see how far the interest in this stuff has gone. Jake Paul is one thing, he’s a big name in American youth and his fights are on major PPVs. KSI is another thing, even, he is a big name in British youth, he has links with the Paul brothers and his fights were on DAZN. This is … less than, to put it mildly, but I want to see what it does. Feel free to ignore it! Bad Left Hook will be covered live.
