By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. has said he would like a shot for the world title against 147-pound WBA champion Yordenis Ugas.
With Ortiz’s WBA Gold welterweight title, he feels he deserves a title against Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) and he doesn’t want to keep waiting.
Ugas would likely prefer a big fight with 147-pound WBO champion Terence Crawford or IBF / WBC champion Errol Spence Jr. rather than facing the dangerous Ortiz.
23-year-old Vergil Jr. (18-0, 18 KOs) just picked up an 8th round knockout victory over Egidijus Kavaliauskas last summer, August 14.
It was an impressive performance for Ortiz as he stopped former “Mean Machine” world title challenger Kavaliauskas in the eighth round.
WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford knocked out Kavaliauskas in nine rounds in 2019, but it wasn’t the same thrilling performance.
Interestingly, Crawford and Ortiz were injured by “Mean Machine” before putting him aside.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. wants Ugas to be next
“I would love this fight. If I could get this fight next, I would love it,” Vergil Ortiz Jr. told Fighthype when asked if he would like to challenge WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas next.
“I don’t see why not. I have the WBA Gold. I’m a little tight under him,” Vergil said of a game with Ugas. “That being said, how the fight is going to go, I don’t dunno.
“It would be an exciting fight, I’ll tell you. That’s about the only thing I’m sure about, but I really can’t give you a straightforward answer on this. It would be an exciting fight.
“Why shouldn’t this fight be happening,” Ortiz said of his desire to challenge Yordenis for his WBA title. “I’m right under him, so maybe I can get a warrant and make it happen.”
“I don’t necessarily have resentment, but I’m like, ‘What else should I do?’,” Vergil said of his struggles to secure a 147 title.
“I have the impression that this last fight [Egidijus Kavaliauskas] gave me more credibility and pushed him. I fought a good fighter in my last fight, and felt I did pretty well. I am ready for a world title fight.
“They can’t say no to me anymore. It’s a matter of time before that happens, ”said Vergil.
We’ll see if Yordenis wants to take the risk of fighting Vergil right now, given he just got a big win over Manny Pacquiao.
This victory made a name for Ugas, even though he was world champion at 147 pounds before the game.
Ortiz wants to organize exciting fights
“People watch boxing for a reason and that’s to watch people get knocked out if we’re being honest,” Vergil said. “This is what people like to see.
“They like to see bad fights **, they like to see competitive fights. As far as I think, I think I’m giving that to the fans. There is a reason people look at me. It is therefore important.
“There was another fight that happened the same night as me. Rigondeaux was a great fight, a great technically solid one. There was a reason I didn’t go to see this fight. You can’t be boring. Nobody will want to watch you if you are boring, ”Ortiz said.
Vergil has certainly had some great fights lately with his wars with Maurice ‘Mighty Mo’ Hooker and ‘Mean Machine’.
These fights were fun to watch, and it will be difficult for Ortiz to overcome them.
